This was only my second trip to Rock Lake and I will be back several times in the near future. The first time was equally successful until the pump went out in my outdrive. With that being said back to the report.

We started trolling about 1/2 mile from the boat launch with 3 colors of leaded line and about 100' of mono leader followed by a orange Apex and a small piece of berkley nightcrawler and a piece of yellow power bait on the second hook. My partner was using red salmon eggs and red fire corn on his exact same set up.

The first fish was on in about 15 minutes. It was a large rainbow who spit the hook at the boat. The next couple fish were smaller rainbows about 15" with fat bodies. We then both had fish on at the same time. My friend landed a 3.75 lb rainbow about 21" and I landed a 20" 2 lb brown. The brown was on the skinny side and had absolutely no front fins. They were nubs of scar tissue. The rainbow was fat and healthy.

Within minutes of getting his line out Scott had another monster rainbow landed. It was only about 2 lbs and 18"

We fished the rest of the day and landed several more fish in the 14" range. We released several as it was hard to keep the smaller ones when the first fish in were so large. The slowest time of the day was from about 2 pm until 4 pm when we did not have a single bite. This was about the time we passed the cabin twards the middle of the lake on the North side although we were fishing more twards the south wall.

We fished the South side all the way to the end of the lake where we turned around. Scott had a huge fish on about a half mile west of the east end.I seriously thought the pole was going to break when the fish took off under the boat. I only got a glimpse of him at that point and would estimate 25" and 5 lbs or better brown. We lost him and the Apex.

We had 8 fish in by 6pm and released a few too. It was a very productive day and we will be back next weekend as well. We have not decided if we will try later in the evening or earlier in the morning. If the bigger fish come up after dark that is what we will try but I am still nervous about all the shallow rocks. When my pump went out we had to drift back while the motor cooled down and we found the rock shelf that was in about 18" of water on the South side. I have also heard that there are more there. I can read a topo map but the only ones I have seen do not show what I saw with my own two eyes.

If anybody can point me twards a accurate topo of the lake i would be grateful. Enjoy the lake but approach with caution! I marked the approximate places we caught the biggest fish. if you make a line between the marks keeping about 150' off shore you will have our approximate route. We swung a little wider down by the picnic table because the water got shallow really fast. We tried keeping it in a minimum of 100' of water.

Were were out 3 colors of leaded line and about 100' of mono and no spoons. I was running just under 2mph. The goal was 1.8 since that seems to be my magic trout speed. I am guessing we were between 15 and 20' deep. We are thinking about using a slip weight next time to try and get down around 50' to see if we can get into some of the monsters that I know are there.

There is no accurate topo map for Rock Lake. I have mapped out the lake on my GPS/locator unit, but it would take weeks to transfer the data to anyone. In short, just be careful out there (just not going to happen). Sounds like the one brown had worn it's front fins off eating crayfish. Sometimes they get a little crazy and get deep into the rocks to get them. In his case, not so smart I'd say. LOL
