Took my good friend Brad night fishing at Loon Lake for kokanee. I had not fished there in two weeks, but was optimistic when we pulled up at the boat launch and saw all the trucks in the parking lot and knew that this was usually a good sign. However, the fishing the first few hours was extremely poor with no bite except for an occasional bluefill. We didn't see or hear anyone catching fish and it seemed like all the boats were over near Granite Point. We fortunately toughed it out and stayed, while most other boats seem to have got discouraged and went home. This determination and persistence paid off for us as we ended up catching 35 kokanee and 1 rainbow. We would have easily caught our double limit of 40 if we could have netted all the fish that broke the water surface, but many of them just flipped out near the boat and got off. We were fishing in 32 feet of water and the fish were biting softer than they were two weeks ago. One of pictures is a few of the kokanee butterflied and boneless before they're dipped in tempura and deep fried, which is a real treat for my family this time of year. The fish are still biting at night, but are a little tougher to find and catch as the Summer goes on. However, if you're willing to go find them there are still lots of 15-16 inch kokanee around the Granite Point area.
