This report represents 2 days of exploring Baker Lake. We did not camp but hauled the boat up there both Saturday and Sunday. Although we fished both days, our efforts were more aligned with exploration and goofing off. We did determine where the sockeye are holding once they truck them up the hill and release them into the lake. While trolling out standard kokanee gear we caught one very scrappy kokanee and had a couple more hits but did not take anything home.

Originally our plan was to fish Baker after we got some things done on Saturday then fish Cavanaugh on Sunday but while exploring on Saturday we found a huge number of mountain blueberries and huckleberries so we headed back to Baker on Sunday morning. Sunday morning berry collection buckets and plenty of things to keep the kids entertained on board we towed the kayak across the lake and started picking berries while the kids paddled around and collected tadpoles. A few hours later we had a ton of berries and blue fingers so we went to Noisy Creek for some further exploration and then we headed back to the ramp.

On the way home we swung thru Concrete and visited the PSE collection facility/interruptive center on the Baker River and there were a million very bright sockeye in the trap. On the road again we decided to stop at the new burger place in Concrete (I think it is called The Cascade Drive-in). They were very friendly; the food was plentiful and excellent. I highly recommend the bacon/blue cheese burger! Back home we got the boat put away and made the first of our mountain blueberry and huckleberry treats a mountain blueberry huckleberry apple pie.

There were two main areas where the fish were holding. The first one was just off Kulshan Point just east of the north end of the orange log boom. The fish seem to be very concentrated in 140-150’ of water suspended at 45-70’ This may be the first congregation place for the recently relocated fish and I would suspect that they are acclimating after their 28 mile truck ride. The second area was a bit of a surprise at my end. About ½ way between Boulder Creek and Panorama point in the old river channel there appears to be an old waterfall. The upper edge is about 50-60’ deep and the downstream depth is around 90-110’ deep. The fish seem to be concentrated at 45-55’ deep in the area of the ancient waterfall. I know that it will be a guessing game as to where the fish will settle in at but working the edges of the old river channel will increase your odds of locating the fish.
