I've fished Union a few times since my last report but I don't want to make them seem so redundant so I'm only posting reports for when there is something new to say.

So here it is..

I FINALLY CAUGHT MY FIRST BLACK CRAPPIE OUT OF LAKE UNION!!! :D
That alone is making me rate this day a 5 :)

Everytime I have fished here, I have wanted to catch a Black Crappie above all other species.
I FINALLY Accomplished that today.
Funny thing is, I caught this Crappie on a Drop Shot Rig when I was fishing for Bass / Panfish.
So when I pulled out a Crappie I was shocked, excited, thrilled, stoked, you name it.
I was ecstatic!

I didn't use a measuring tape but I know the distance from my finger tip to wrist is 8 inches and it was a little more than an inch longer than that so I would say that this Crappie is a solid 9 inches, maybe 9 1/2.

After that, I caught a bunch of fish but the fishing has been getting progressively slower and slower.
None of them fish really had much size, pretty much all dinks but it's still a lot of fun.
I switched between using a 1/32 oz tube jig and a Drop Shot Rig with worms.
Both methods produced.
I thought the fish would be in deeper water with teh water being cold but I caught most of my fish fairly close to the bank.
It seems like they are still holding tight to the weedline / structure even in this colder weather.

Today's Species List:
Largemouth Bass
Smallmouth Bass
Rock Bass
Yellow Perch
Pumpkinseed Sunfish
Bluegill
Sculpin
BLACK CRAPPIE :D

While we were fishing, a GIANT MASSIVE BEAVER came out from under the dock and scared the crap out of me and my friend.
Also, when I was cruising the shoreline to check out the structure I saw a HUGE HUGE HUGE FISH splash and dart away from shore towards the dock.
I couldn't see it long enough to see what it was but judging by the bronze color I would say that it was a FREAKING HAWG of a Smallmouth.
Either that or the World Record Rock Bass because this fish was beyond massive.

Also, on my previous trip to Union, I caught another Salmon just like the one I caught before which I am told is a Blackmouth Salmon.
I caught it using a tube jig just like the one I caught the first time.
Interesting..
However this time it didn't completely swallow the jig and was released alive and well.

Forecast predicts rain all weekend so I wanted to get in a night session.

I always forget to mention this in my reports but all fish were caught and released :)

Cool report! Are you sure you didn't see a nutria instead of a beaver? I have seen several large nutrias around Seward Park and Andrews Bay in Lake Wa..

Yes, I am sure. I know the difference between a beaver and a nutria. I see nutrias at log boom park all the time. That comment was a bit offensive and condescending. I dont appreciate it.

Haha. I dont think he was trying to be condescending...but weird question. Nutria are like HUGE water rats, right? No idea we had those around here.

Nice report man. Are black crappie different than other crappie I see in lakes around here? I can't tell from your picture. Super weird to catch the blackmouth with the method you describe. Maybe you stumbled onto something!

no, i believe they are the same as the ones you see come out of the lakes around here. i haven't seen any white crappie come out of washington but that's just me.

With the damage you do shore fishing those fiish are in BIG trouble if you ever get a boat!! Great job, great reports, better enthusiasm!! Keep it up! Btw...stay back as far as you can and step lightly when checking out that shoreline cover...next time you might get a chance to cast at that pig?!!

not intended to be condescending at all. It may have been dark by the looks of the photo and I thought my first nutria sighting was actually a beaver...
I think highly of you and your fishing efforts, I would not have written the query if I would have thought you'd be offended. Apologies.

what the heck is a nutria? I'm from Wisconsin, I wouldn't know one if it bit me on the ***, LOL. Thx for the report.

i understand coretron22, i apologize for lashing out, was having one of those days.. mike, a nutria looks like an overgrown rat that swims well in the water. looks almost like a beaver / otter with a rat tail lol

I saw one of those at the arboretum. Never heard of them either - strange name, too.

I've been shocked at how many I've seen this year...good thread in the forums. Didn't mean to hijack the report either.
cheers!
