After getting skunked for walleye below Wells we were ready for some action. We actually left the sunshine and drove back into snow flurries to fish. My fishing buddy had invited me along to try out his newly aquired boat. As I'm used to being exposed to the elements in my livingston this is a dream come true. It's a 19Ft. Lowe with windshield, top, heater, & a bow mount troller. We headed out from the Corps launch with a slight breeze. We trolled for a couple of hours up by pumps 1& 2. We tried rapalas, flies, hot shots & multiple colors of wedding rings behind dodgers without success. We both have 2 pole permits so we were really giving it all we could. The wind was picking up so we decided to slip into a cove & plunk some power bait. Within a couple of minutes of casting out I had my first fish of the day. It had swallowed the hook. A newly planted 14" tagged triploid. As I'm cursing my choice to use bait my other pole gets bit. In less than five minutes of choosing to fish bait I've killed 2 fish that had the potential to get BIG some day. My partner caught a 15" & 18" fish in short order also. All 4 fish didn't quite weigh 8 LBS total. Those fish would have been a good time on the fly rod or spinner. But they just wouldn't hit 'em. Water temp was 52 Degrees. I'm sure it will pick up soon! Be safe out there!
