Decided that the ice was thick enough to head out onto the ice. Ice is between 5 n 7 inches with about 3 inches or so of clear, clean ice. We set up camp about 50 yards from shore bout halfway up the lake east of the dock. Knocked 3 holes with the trusty axe and got to work. Weather was clear and cold but not quite like previous days. Bout 15 minutes in I land 5 decent perch and onto the stringer they go. I was using worms and my friend was using a green crappie jig. Another 20 minutes pass by and my friend yells, "I got one!". After a 30 min struggle on a 26" ice rod and 6lb test, we pulled this monster out of the hole. What a rush!!! I decided I should use the same jig, but what are the odds I would hook one? 15 minutes later I do just that. Drag all the way up; bad mistanke (an accident of course). Line rips out and I see the monster. Another bute, this one much more active. Runs back an forth, n I was unable to keep the line from rubbing against the ice, n...well...you know the rest :'-( ..... Overall Landed several fish...had a blast...will be back soon!

They put in 45- 8 lb plus and 80- 4,5 lb plus Broodstock Nov.22 ,So there is a good chance of catching a monster trout through the ice on Mattoon. Crappie type jigs are very good at catching them.
