Well, I had just enough time to make a jaunt over o the Quincy lakes in Grant county to try for some decent sized Rainbow trout. I was actually hoping to try out my new 4 horse Johnson outboard motor on my Jon boat but as luck would have it, there was a newly formed sheet of ice on the East end of the lake. I met a really nice fella named Jim from Ephrata who was cleaning his catch of stocker trout when I arrived. He even gave me a hand tied fly AND a spinner to try! . We had the lake to ourselves for the first hour and but the fish weren't really biting for me at first. I tried a casting bubble and fly, a worm and a spinner with no takes. When I switched up to a pumpkin crappie jig, I got my first keeper, a fat 14" rainbow. My new buddy Hans(Scoutii340) gave me a tip on spinner color and between the jig and rooster tail I caught and released 6 trout and ended up taking home a 5 fish limit. The wind came up and it got cold fast. . It was surprising how few fishermen were out today. It should only get better as things start to warm up> Jiggy

Nice report, Jiggy. Sorry I couldn't make it today. Anything bigger than 14"? I'm going tomorrow and maybe Sat. For the derby (Rufus Woods is off, bummer). Might just blow up the float tube & troll a fly or two & win that derby! And sorry I didn't have the info on the east end launch. I just didn't get up there Tuesday.

Scoutii. I only got 1 decent fish, that 14" male. all the others were short, fat and oddly, the males were sexually mature and dark colored. I 've seen this with atlanic salmon smolts while working at Trout Lodge, but never in such young rainbow trout. The male rainbows I caught had kyped hooked noses and white milt coming out of them. Most averaged barely 11". Good luck at the derby bro. Jiggy

Jiggy, were you fishing the crappie jig under the float ? All worked up to try the new toy strapped to the boat and the lake is frozen. I bet it was tempting to break ice? I have seen some interesting methods fishermen use to break thin ice with there boats. Hope the motor runs like a dream. Those fish you caught sound to be very colorful.
