I had an unexpected opportunity to spend a few hours fishing Medical from llam-1pm with a friend who knows what he is doing, and was there on the lake when I arrived. We fished the north end and had good success fishing chironomids under indicators. Biggest I landed was at 19 inches, but my friend landed two fish over 20. When I arrived, the chironomids were not showing, but shortly after noon, small olive "buzzers" started appearing and by 1pm the hatch was in full swing. Took one throat sample, and as suspected based on the adults skittering on the surface, that fish had gorged himself on olive pupae about a 16 in size. That being said, while a small olive zebra midge took some fish, chromies worked before the hatch got going and remained effective while the hatch was in full swing. All of our fishing was done with floating lines and indicators, which allowed us to keep our mids in the depth zone where the fish were feeding (the bottom two feet of the water column). I had to leave shortly after the hatch got going, so I cannot say whether the fish became more selective as time went on to patterns that matched more precisely the bugs in the water. My friend and I had a number of "doubles" ("triples" if you count the guy next to us who was not fishing with us) today. The fish were pretty active as the hatch got going and I assume it continued after I left the water at 1pm. There also a huge "float tube/pontoon boat" hatch today- lots and lots of fisherman on the water in the north end.

I too was out there in my blue aluminum boat fishing in the same vicinity of dbk,, I caught 8 fish for the day fishing from 0930-1545 using chromies in a size 12 and a black epoxy buzzer with orange wing pads and a red but tag on the fly in a size 14,, my largest fish of the day was a beautiful 25" rainbow on the the epoxy buzzer I tied. What a fight she gave.. The rest of the fish were browns and tigers averaging 16"-20". It was a great day. I think the whole Spokane Fly fishers club was there,, I counted 18 boats on the water.

I met some great guys from the club.. Hey Gene and Gail.

Kevin..
