Did the drop shot thing at American today in the wind. Tough to keep the boat in position but did find many schools of perch in 50 to 75 feet. Caught a full dozen in the 10 inch range. A couple were around half pound. Used a double drop shot righ with a 4" Yamomoto Kut tail on top and a Crappie Candy white straight tail worm on bottom with a 1/2 oz drop shot sinker. Get on top of the schools and the action is on. Thing is, wind was so strong and schools were moving so much, it was tough to get onto them at all. Locate a school and by the time the rig gets to the bottom, the fish have moved on or the boat has.

Quite a lot of bass boats out there today. Saw guys pitching jigs and plastics around docks, spinnerbaits in the shallows, and deep jigging too but did not see anyone with any fish. By mid day the wind scared most folks off the north end. I think I had a decent hit on a deep water hump but did not get a good hookset. Its gotta get better soon.

Excellent choice for perch rigging in deep water. Hope the bite picks up for you too. Jiggy

Good job on the perch! I think this early it's a kokanee deal on American. Gonna hit it Friday and/or Saturday and target kokes until we get limits then switch over to perch jerking. Hopefully they'll move a little shallower soon.

Were the perch you caught spawned out?

Every single perch I caught yesterday was a female that was absolutely loaded with eggs. They are still deep so I dont expect that the spawn will occur for a few more weeks when the water warms up a bit. I mean they were loaded with eggs- there was more eggs than meat on them. I would have C/R the fish but from that depth they are so bloated when they come up there is no getting them back down again. I dont have a needle to gas them and have not really done that before anyway, so any fish that comes up from 40 or more feet go home for dinner at this point. Thankfully, I have not caught any bass in the slot from those depths that cannot be kept so I guess it is OK so far. That is an issue to think about, however.

As for the kokanee- I saw many sporadic small schools of fish hovering in the 20-30 foot range over the 60-80ft depths on the depth finder. I have to assume that they are kokanee or some other kind of trout unless they are rogue schools of crappie (not likely). I saw many folks trolling downriggers out there yesterday early and did not see any fish landed but I have never fished for Kokes so I dont know too much about that at all.

Another thought. I have not had a decent depthfinder until just recently when I purchased the Lowrance Elite-5 DSI that I use now. I am seeing much more down there than I ever have and I think this will revolutionize my fishing from here out. One question though for some of you more experienced bass/panfishers with electronics, where would you find the Rock Bass at this time of year? I used to consistently catch them at St Clair in cold water in the 35-40 ft range and they would hold tight to wood cover there. American has a tremendous population of Rock Bass so I know that they have to be holding up somewhere. Where are they now? I should be able to see them on the finder but I am not sure where to look for them. Any ideas?
