Did a daybreak, early morning trip to American. Water temp is still COLD- 48 degrees. Just a slight breeze from the SW this morning which made it much more tolerable than previous weekend. Did not find any bass today but did catch a few fat perch and a 18" Rainbow on a drop shot rig with a Yamamoto Kut Tail 4" worm in Green Pumpikin-Blue Metal Flake.

I got to my favorite spot right at the break of day and tried everything I could think of. Saw some fishing moving on the depthfinder but I think they were some of those larger rainbows looking for an easy meal. One followed all the way to the boat on my Zoom Ultravibe Speed Craw. I dropped it back in and hit took a swipe at it but no taker on that one. Soon after I moved from that spot a couple of guys in a bass boat showed up to the same spot. I saw them on Thursday there and they camped on that spot for about 3 or more hours. They said on Thursday that they were catching some bass but I didnt see them boat any while I was there on Thursday or today.

Finally found a couple of schools of perch still in about 60-65 feet. Wind started picking up about the time I decided to try for the perch so it was tough to keep the boat in place again. Still picked up 4 nice fat ones, look like males. Before I left the lake at about 10:00, I counted 32 boats in the middle of the lake fishing for Kokanee. The flotilla has arrived! Hope they all were successful.

All in all, not a bad day. Better than Saturday morning TV any day.

Just curious, do you ever target mid-day this time of year for bass? It's been my finding that the water warms up a few degrees regardless of ambient temps and definitley seems to have an impact on the lakes I fish... In March my usual launch time to go bass fishing is 9am and I will fish until 3-5pm, that's it. It has worked quite well! Like I said, just curious... Thanks for the report, I was thinking on trying for smallies tomorrow.

Yes, early season mid day can be pretty good. I guess it depends on how much pressure the water gets.

American is a very busy lake, especially just a few weeks before the closed waters open. Lots of people getting their boats out for the first time of the year and lots of cabin fever oppressed bassers itching for a good tug on the line- this lake sees a lot of anglers in March and April. That is why I try to hit it early early early this time of year. Once the rest of the lakes open, American will see less pressure overall although the first weekend will be obnoxiously busy anyway (a lot of folks do not realize that the lake is actually open year round).
