First off, YES I wanted to rate this day a 5!!! Just trying to follow the rules... Launched around 9:30am and there were 3 other boats already on the water bass fishing. The wind was blowing I would say 10-15 with gusts to 20? Water temps were 47-48.5*. I started the day in the second cove on the east side of the lake trying to keep out of the wind at first. I was throwing jigs and grubs and the occassional DT10 crankbait, didn't produce a thing. Headed to another spot, and I won't get to detailed as I know there is a tournament on this lake next weekend, but I will say and have been saying "grass and lipless crankbaits go together like peanut butter and jelly this time of year"! First largemouth of the day was 8.4lbs (new personal best) she felt like a wad of weeds at first, but then head shook and it was on! She fought like a horse and parked it under the boat twice! The second was 6lbs even, she did one full lap around the boat and the initial hit felt like a 'jig tap'... the next two were 3.0 and 3.2 respectively, never saw a smallie, but those areas were getting pounded by the wind around noon when I wanted to fish them and I couldn't hold position with my 52lb/12v trolling motor...time to go 24v! All my fish came from a 50yd x 50yd area I found last year. The fish don't seem to be to target specific with the lack of sun we've had, just gotta pound an area into submission I guess?.

That's one hell of a fish and should be rated a 5. Good job. Your friend in the kayak from last season.

rockjiggr: I thought about throwing her in the livewell and hitting up one of the other boats to take some pics, but decided against it. It was a tough fight for a cold fish and I wanted to get her back in the water as quick as possible..... fishnut: thanks good to hear from you! Also, I forgot to mention I was off the water by 2pm and don't know how the other boats did?. Including the two 5lbers from my "Secret Lakes" report, that's 4 fish over 5lbs on lipless cranks so far this year, not bad at all...

I feel you on the "picture" thing, I just caught a fish I couldn't get out of the water. I almost tried to tow it to shore, but I figure the fishes health is more important than bragging rights. I was in Arlington all week for work, I wish I had enough time to fish Goodwin. I had my boat with me too. Nice fish.

Oh, and nice job on your decision to release that fish right away. I am not really a believer in the toting a fish around in a live well just for a good picture. I think it throws them off, especially at or near the spawn, but, that is only my opinion:/
