On one of my spey casts I clipped my back with the fly on the forward swing, embedding it in my back. That thing hurt like a knife! Felt like a bullet hit me. The hook penetrated my raincoat, my coat underneath and my sweatshirt. Fortunately, no blood and I was able to clamp the barb and remove it without unraveling my entire coat. Stupid me. Be careful when learning spey casting, or any long distance fly casting for that matter. On the bright side, another rock bass. This one slightly larger than yesterday's. Only 2 bites before nightfall and then this guy right after. He was about 6 inches, or about an inch longer than yesterday's. He fought alright, for his size. Prior to that I could see a mediums sized fish hovering around the east bank. Roll casted a small prince nymph right at him (big mistake) and sure enough spooked him all the way back to deep water. Doh! Oh well. Water temp was definitely colder than yesterday, which would explain the decline in bite rate. A gentleman fishing next to me caught a fair amount of lake weed. No risers at all. Night fishing seems to be the only time I can get a hook up in this cold weather. Black woolly bugger on the 9' rod + spey line.

Haha, sort of. It's a standard 9' foot switch-casting rod and I put spey line on it. The extra weight helps make up for the lack of length. It’s roughly half the length of the average spey rod. Yeah, spey rod fishing for rock bass would be a little overkill. :)

Sure thing Elijah. I could use a few pointers on bass fishing. It was really fun for me last year.
