Potholes Open Day 2:

Launched at 6AM and weigh in was at 11:30AM.

Sitting in 17th, 14lbs. behind the lead sack of 29lbs. brought in the first day we decided to go for consistency and go for Smallmouth again first.

So we ran out to the dam again and just covered water anywhere from 10-25 feet casting Hula Grubs, even if the weather was windy and frigid cold. The water temp was hovering around 46-47lbs. We didn't hook a single fish for the first hour or so, but kept on chunking along knowing that if we do hook them it will be quality. Jon hooks up first with a 4 lb. SM in 20 feet, and it was one quality smallmouth per every 45 mins or so after that just fan casting around the rocks covering water. We ended up catching 7 smallmouth, and weighing 6 for 18lbs. even. A 3 pound average.

We did so with the same set up as day one, just casting Yamamoto DT Hula Grub and covering water. The deepest one came out of 22 ft and the shallowest at 12 ft. Never seeing water temps above 48F.

By the end of the day it was almost 60F with no wind whatsoever.

Weighing in front of us was the team who eventually won, and broke the Potholes Open record bag with 29.95 lbs, of Largemouth!! 51 lbs. for the weekend. On the other hand there were 40 boats with 0's. On fire for a few, horrible for most. With only 10 lbs a day taking home a check.

We weighed in 18lbs putting us at 33.61 lbs for the weekend and finishing us at 9th place! It was my personal best weight and finish for the Potholes Open so Jon & I were pretty happy about that.

ALSO: I will be working at Mardon Resort this summer doing multiple jobs. I will be living there and guiding there all summer!! So now I am booking full day, morning, and afternoon/night trips for Potholes now at very low rates!

Looking forward to seeing you all at Mardon this summer!

Nick. Great job on breaking the top 10! What was the best pattern for tourney? Were you throwing football jigs with your hula grubs or texa rigging them? Also, could you share your most productive color combo? Do you use an attractant with your hula grubs? Just curious. Jiggy

In the previous report I talked a little more in depth because I had the time. We used Brown colored Football Head grubs and I like to use Trigger X Bass Spray. Its Rapala's version of the Gulp type attractant.

Thanks Guys!
