In spite of the nasty rain and wind in Burlington this morning, I hooked the boat up and headed for Lake Stevens. I only had a few hours to fish but I NEEDED to go fishing. To be honest for me the fishing was very slow this morning. I caught and released some smaller kokanee, lost a nice one at the boat and kept a nice and fat 14” fish.

On one side I was running a tried and true dodger and custom spinner combination at 6-12’ on one of the downriggers. Off the other downrigger I was running a variety of things, trying out some different lures, custom spinners and various baits that I have been experimenting with. My trolling speed varied between 1.1 and 1.9 mph and the water temperature was around 49 degrees. With the wind it was a tough go this morning.

Tough go or otherwise the day was not with out a moment or two of excitement. At around 8:30-9:00 this morning I lowered a rig to a healthy meter mark and got bit. It was immediately evident that it was no kokanee and ½ hour later the mystery fish finally showed itself. It ultimately broke the leader and I lost it but it was a heck of a ½ hour. Sorry, but in an attempt to maintain some level of credibility I won’t say what I thought the mystery fish was. I pulled out of the water sometime later and headed home with a yet to subside adrenalin rush.

Randy, you did say: " ½ hour later the mystery fish finally showed itself". By that admission, a person could rationalize that you saw or got a glimpse. Also what was said: " Sorry, but in an attempt to maintain some level of credibility I won’t say what I thought the mystery fish was". Strangely coincidental to your experience was Quad had a "heck of a fish" hooked up in Lake Stevens. That ultimately broke his 8 or 10lb leader after a back and forth, give and take, rod doubling, outboard motor position and repositioning to stay close, struggle between man and beast. This leads me to a question: Was the location of the "hook up" any where near the aerator?
