This was my 2nd time out to Lake Larsen and the conditions early on were a bit windy. Walked on the shore, which is made of decaying peet and almost fell into the gooy shoreline after the ground shifted. Do not wade in this water! It's like mud and quicksand. Water color was like black tea and I wondered if fish could see anything. Started out with a black woolly bugger and hoped the high contrast against the cloudy sky would make it highly visible for fish on the bottom, but nothing. Then, switched to a partiallly destroyed green wooly bugger I had in reserve. Got my first 3 crappie ever! Forgot the camera at home though. :( Nothing worth bragging about. Largest was only 6 inches. A local fisherman said you can get some nice bass in there in the summer. Shore fishing is limited to a dock surrounded by lily pads and some unstable shoreline. If you wanna fish this lake, either go 100% weedless to get past the lily pads or get a float tube. As the sun went down, the water became like glass and I could see risers. Drooling to get out there with the dry flies!

Good job with the start on crappie! Sounds like a great lake for flies and tubes!

Thanks man. Note: the local fisherman I talked to snagged his bait on a lily pad on his very first cast and lost his lure. Short accurate casting was he key to staying free of the lily pads. Slow strips near the surface were exciting since you could see the fish take the fly!

I grew up with that lake in my back yard. Fishing was unreal in the late 60s and 70s Huge Bass, Crappie on every cast, wild cutthroat and all the catfish you could catch. In the 80s it was dicovered by non local people, lots of them. They took everything they could catch by the bucket full. it was sickening, the Lake never recovered. There are still some nice largemouth in there, now is a good time for that, you wont find any large Crappie. Weedless or floating/ shallow diving perch pattern rapalas for a few remaining Piggies. Please release.

Yeah man, I agree. Small lakes like this should be C&R only or else the fish in it will go the way of the dinosaur.. Anyone know of what political action one could take to get a lake to become C&R only? I'm not even sure if it's safe to eat fish out of that lake. The water is gross and literally looks like rusty nails disolved in a bucket of water, with motor oil garnishing on the shoreline.

Kudos for releasing the fish. That lake is so small, I dont think the popluations of fish can sustain themselves if people kept all the fish from there.
