went to lake sammamish yesterday had a rough day fishing but the weather was nice, no wind makes it easy to fish out of my raft. i got to the lake around 1 or so and took off from the south end and headed north fished for about 3 hours before i hooked a nice small mouth dropshoting a pumpkin colored grub around a dock i continued to fish hard throwing every type of plastic bait i had finally around 7 i decided to head back so i put on a crankbait and first cast i hooked a little smallie so i continued to troll and hooked another little smallie i mean real little so i continue on and all of a sudden wam i thought i hooked a good smallie but it was a pretty big trout about 18 inches it felt good but not a bass so i continue on and right in front of some west something park, cant reamber the exact name, ka wam the fight was on and i thought for a second it might be another big trout but when i got it up to the boat it was a monster small mouth i kick myself in the butt for not useing the net i tried to reach down and get him by the lip thinking as how he had six hooks in his lip it would be ok wrong some how the hooks just came out. has any body else been having a tough time on sammamish the bit has been weird i cant figure them out i got lucky with that crank bait so i would appreciate any advice someone is willing to give

Maybe you didn't "Luck Out". Sounds like you found the right pattern for the day. You just need to think about where you were when you were hooking fish (water depth, on a drop-off, etc.) You should be able to narrow it down and reapeat your success. Usually, where you find 1 smallmouth, you will find more of the same (or similar size). Next time you nail one trolling, take a bunch of casts in the area where your lure would have been when you got the strike and you should be able to pull up a few more. You just need to really pay attention to where your lure was when you got the strike. Then, when you go back to fan cast the area, make sure you set up away from where you got the strike (so you don't spook whatever is down there) and work the area over. Of course, as time goes on, the bass' movements will change (shallow to deep to shallow) so just because you hit them trolling a spot one weekend, does not mean they will be there the next. Good luck.
