This time, I took the 13 year old grandson with me, again the first ever fishing trip for the two of us. We were on the water from 07:30 to 11:00. Weather was quite windy, never took off our sweatshirts. Fishing was slower than two weeks ago, we quit with 7 cutts in the ice chest up to 13 inches. Surface water temp was 68 to 70. Fish seemed to be clustered from surface to 15 feet, then from 25 down to 40 feet, larger ones were deeper. We trolled a #2 Needlefish in firetiger, and an old red-white-nickel fly rod size spoon called a Gypsy King that hasn't been made for a long time. Small spring planters are big enough to get hooked, but not worth cooking yet. These seemed to be in the 15 to 20 foot depth. Water never got dangerous, but by 11 the wind was blowing hard enough that it wasn't fun anymore.

Aw C'mon stan, there's quite a few of us out here who remember Gypsy King's real well, both fly rod weight and casting.

Hey deadeye,
Thanks for the comment. My grandfather collected Gypsy King spoons everywhere he went, in every color known to man. I got all his fishing stuff when he passed away. I still have a bunch of the spoons, and am hoarding them. They seem to get bites sometimes when nothing else will.

I was trying to figure out what a Gypsy King looks like so I googled it. Turns out I have about a dozen of them in my tackle box in almost never used condition. They're all about 2" long and in a bunch of different colors. They're kind of like a Daredevil knockoff if I have my facts right. I think I'm heading to Badger this Monday--I'll have to give them a try. Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the response, Lotech.
My Gypsy King Spoons are just barely over an inch long, maybe an inch and a quarter, and VERY thin metal. The shape at the hook end, with a fairly deep concave dish, seems to give it a better wobble than most spoons you can buy now.
Also, hate to disappoint you, but Badger closes today, September 30.

Thanks for the heads-up Stan. Getting caught fishing out of season could have been an ugly experience. I was thinking it closed Oct 31. Don't know why there is a difference in closure dates between so many lakes. I should have known, I've been fishing Eastern Washington for almost 60 years. Looks like we'll be heading to either Chapman or Marshall.
