Hiked up with my son James to check out this close in mountain lake. At 2.4 miles and 250 ft of elevation gain, 2,400 up, it is snow-free unlike a lot of Alpine lakes this year.

The lake hold rainbow and cutthroat but not for me. I cast a FCS and also wooley buggers under a casting float but only got one little tap. I spoke with a guy camping there and he mentioned a good hatch last night with lot's of surface activity.

This lake would be a really good choice to hike in a raft due to the short hiking distance and minimal elevation gain.

Thanks for the report Mike! Your alpine lake reports keep making my list of "want to fish lakes" longer

Just curious- What are highest levels you have found to still be frozen? I do not imagine stuff on East Side of Passes to be frozen still, but then again we never expected a deep-freeze at end of May in west-slopes @2,000' . Thx for report and am curious what the frozen-lake level is on West-Side. Have you hit 8 Mile out of Icicle? I was pretty happy to have German Browns hitting of size last summer....oh wait, our summer hasn't began yet! Have fun!

I was looking at hikes in the Alpone lakes area, Lake 22 specifically. I checked www.wta.org (Washington Trails Association and found reports from hikers on lakes in the 3,000+ ft range to still have a fait amount of snow on the trails, and I believe Lake 22 was still partly iced over. It depends so much on which direction the lakes is open to. South facing lakes get ice free first of course. I'm guessing east side lakes are in better shape. I have not fished 8 Mile. Another to add to my list. :-)
