Ok the short version. We launched at Panorama Point Friday evening with the intent of metering around for a couple hours to figure out where the fish were holding. The plan was a good one except, my fish finder decided to take the day off and would not show the bottom or much of anything else for that matter. Oh well, minor set back, we motored over to our chosen overnight spot and set the hook for the night. After some fried chicken and father son time we turned out the lights, pulled the sleeping bags over our heads and were soon counting jumping sockeye as we fell asleep. Five minutes later I wake up and it is full on daylight out…we had overslept!

After a bit of a late start we were fishing by 6:30 and had # 1 in the boat shortly there after. In spite of the late start and funky fish finder we had a good day going 22 for 6. We were running 3 rods, 2 off the downriggers and 1 with a 4oz sinker. At the business end we were running dodger/squid, Dodger/smiley blade and something new a dodger/sockeye fly I came up with this year. All the hooks were tipped with shrimp. Although we had action on all the gear the fly accounted for a majority of our fish. For us the magic trolling speed was 1.3 miles per hour. We ran the gear between 12’ and 38’ deep with 12’-14’ being the most productive. Final count 6 fish to 7 pounds, a great opening day experience and we were home by 1:00.

nice job man, good to see the fish. We would have been done very early if we hadnt lost so many strikes. Nice fish

Always enjoy your very helpful posts. We talked last year at shannon creek launch. I will be up this coming weekend. Couple things for ya: Do ya know where they are putting the fish in this year and last year and is at both ends? Last year of course we all fished at the north end, same today? Is the other end by the dam any good. I dont have enough boat/motor or time to run all over the large lake, appreciate any help. Also, do you feel the shrimp really makes the diff, better than scent on mini hooch? What type of shrimp? small sand, cured? or just bay shrimp. Short leaders as in Lake Wa? and finally the shallow depth did it stay that wall all morn since the usual there last year was 40' to 55'. P.S. Is your killer sockeye fly remaining a secret?

Nice post as usual rseas! Saw you and your boy bug out at the end of your day. Were you fishing in the shallow water (50' depth across from Shannon Creek campground) or in the deep zone with the rest of the armada?
