We had a guest from Alaska and she is used to dip netting sockeye in some river up there so I thought we would break her in on rod and reel fishing for them. Knowing we only had an hour or so to fish we took the gamble and we were able to get up to the lake around 6:00 Sunday evening. Running all the standard gear we set up and started fishing outside the other boats and fisher people. I figured that with all the fishing pressure the fish would be scattered so we concentrated on the north side of the lake, west of Shannon Creek. I think that it was a good call but we just didn’t have enough time really get it dialed in.
We had 4 fish on, two other drive-bys and one very fat kokanee before we had to head back to the boat ramp. After some brief discussion about no fish and what it would have cost to hire a guide I think that our Alaskan friend is going to stick with dip netting the sockeye in her home rivers.
