MarDon Resort Fishing Report “Fresh News” 8-2-11

By: Nick Barr & Mike Meseberg

Early August temperatures have been in the low to mid 90’s range. This additional heat has lit up the topwater bass bite all across the Potholes Recreation Area. Floating Rapalas, Rebel Pop-R’s, buzzbaits, and floating frogs are all on the menu; especially the Spro Popper Frog. Bass Guide Nick Barr reports, “Twitch and pop these baits across the surface along any brush or weed mat along the deep side of a dune and get ready for some explosive strikes”. The water temperatures rising into the high 70’s and topping out around 80 degrees have these bass on the prowl. The Walleye fishing has still been producing, but with the current water level and location of the bait, they are roaming all over Potholes Reservoir. “Those Walleye are biting from 6 feet to 45 feet of water, from trolling Rapala Shad Raps to dragging worms” Walleye Guide Shelby Ross explains. Try trolling along the outer face of the dunes, or around the rock piles along the dam for some great multi-species action. Jumbo Rainbow Trout, Smallmouth Bass, and Walleye have all been biting in the same areas as they all gorge on the abundant yellow perch.

While either Bass or Walleye fishing you may run into people camping & swimming out on the sand dunes. With the heat and warm water temperatures, it is the perfect time to get out and have your Eastern Washington beach swimming adventure. The water level on Potholes remains higher than 2010 levels, at a current elevation of 1036.25 feet above sea level. With the increase in irrigation and hot weather, the reservoir is dropping roughly a foot a week. This late high water has allowed the spawn to complete again in 2011 to provide awesome perch, crappie, and bluegill for people to catch, and provides our amazing bass & walleye population a solid food base throughout the year. Those same Perch, Crappie, and Bluegill are beginning to show up in numbers around the MarDon Resort marina, so look forward to some great fishing off our dock within the next few weeks!

When the lake drains to its lowest water levels, the Potholes Reservoir Underwater Habitat Project is absolutely necessary to allow new, young-of-the-year fish a sanctuary to live and grow. It ensures fish populations for years to come, so many generations from now can enjoy the Potholes fishery.
