went out at about 630 last night to try and put some more squawfish in the freezer for crabbing. I wasn't fishing 5 minutes before a strike. It didn't stick and I grabbed the pole and it hit again. Fish on. It started making run after run taking line. I'm only using 6 lb so I had to play it. it ran side to side up and down. I didn't know what I had. I thought maybe a salmon(we catch one occasionally), but it wasn't jumping, maybe a big pike but I was in open water when it hit. Eventually I had a glimpse of it, a carp! What is a carp doing hitting a glass shad rap trolled at 1.5 mph. It made a few more runs before I netted it. It weighed out just below 14 lbs. That added considerably to the crab bait in the freezer. It was just an awesome fight. I've caught halibut, lingcod, seabass, ocean salmon this year and this was one of the funnest fights of the year. I love light tackle when a big fish is on. Also caught 3 average squaws. Fished a little over an hour. I was trolling anywhere from 11 ft to 50 ft of water. I was trying to stay off the weeds. both plugs worked equally well (2 ea). I had the glass shad rap in perch and a shad rap in yellow/blue. Trolled 1-1.5mph. Lots of fish jumping or popping the surface at dusk. Could be some great fly fishing action or trolling right on the surface. I know this isn't the most prized of fish but a great fight is a great fight.
