Not a bad day. It was sunny and I had a couple hours so the boat and I headed for Lake Samish. With the boat in the water around 10:00 I head for the smaller lake end of the lake. Once I throttled down to 1.4 mph the first rig in the water was a small blue and gold Rapala. I ran it 80’ behind the clip and dropped the ball to 68’ where I was metering a nice concentration of fish. The second rig in was a rainbow swing blade followed by a green mini-squid tipped with a gulp maggot. I ran the rainbow swing blade /mini-squid set up 30’ behind the clip and set the downrigger at 38’. Before I had rod 2 in fishing mode the Rapala had scored and there was a fish dancing all over the place back behind the boat. It turned out to be a large kokanee sporting his spawning colors. Once he was safely swimming away I reset the rigger as before, poured a cup of coffee and immediately it was fish on again (This fish posing for a picture before being released). I think that I was on to something because the Rapala was consistently getting bit as soon as I got it in the zone. Being that the Rapala was unscented I fished C & R for about ½ hour, instantly hooking fish as soon as the rigger was in the 50’ zone. All that going on while the other side of the boat wasn’t being ignored. The swing blade /mini-squid set up was also stirring up interest and getting bit every 10-15 minutes resulting in multiple doubles. For the morning I ended up with my limit, 5 fish running 12-16” and had the opportunity to C&R 10-15 other kokanee of varying size.

I don’t know which is worse, fishing all day and only scratching out just a few fish or digging the boat out of the garage, hooking it up and hauling it to the lake then catching my limit in less than an hour. Not really complaining, especially considering that I had things to get done this afternoon but it was a short trip. Actually it was a great hour, the fog lifted and the sun came out. The water was like a mirror reflecting the beautiful fall colors. It was like fishing in a painting. Even better, I was the only boat on the whole lake.

Great report. I like to go early in the morning, get my limit quick, come home get it taken care of and then do a bunch of other things on the to do list. I also caught fish 13-15 inch range today.

Nice catch. I was going to head out this morning but with a baby due tuesday I thought I have better get some other things done first. Thanks for shareing

Congratulations! # 2 will be a blast, especially considering that your little girl will be at the perfect age to appreciate her new sibling. I wonder if we can do an on-line shower? Again congratulations and enjoy, BTW, keep this up and you'll need a bigger boat...

Thanks, I thinks shes excited not sure if she knows what to expect. I told the wife we need a bigger boat she just rolled her eyes and said sure we do. :) I thinks shes also a good age to sneak off and go fishing and give mommy/baby some alone time.

rseas another nice report! Looks like calm water and another beautiful day. Still not too sure on the smaller section of lake U fish if you meant it was on the opposite side of the bridge (small body of water in NW corner). But I can't imagine that little pocket getting that deep- then again I wouldn't know since never had a depth finder out there. Guess there's a church retreat back there now. Used to be WWU's rowing/boat house there many moons ago (early 1990s, DOH!). Was some decent beaver ponds back up in the hills (common to the little stream) there too I used to flyfish. Anyhow, cna do the reminisce thing all night at work LOL.

Either way, thanx again for another nice report!

Nice to see pics of the lake in Fall, brings back some memories.

how late does the kokanee fishing go at samish? was thinking about going sunday for c&r for cutts and see if there are still any nice kokanee

There are kokanee available all year but the serious kokanee fishing usually wraps up by the end ot October.

A tough one my but here is my 2 cents. I would start along the north shore of the little lake. All of our larger Lake Samish (up to 21") kokanee have been from that area in October. If I get to go my game plan will be to fish that area for a few hours, chasing meter marks looking for a larger fish. Then go look for perch in the bigger main lake. Good luck tomorrow and maybe I'll see you out there.
