Loaded up the family today and headed to Potholes for a little trolling. I was hoping for a really good trout bite, but things were a little slow. My three year old reeled in one, my two year old reeled in two (with help from Daddy), Daddy got one, and Mommy netted all the fish. My 6 wk old daughter got skunked, but she seemed to only want to sleep. The boys watched a little "Finding Nemo" to pass the time and we all enjoyed some hotdogs and sausages from the grill. We all had a really nice day on the water as a family with some really nice weather. Now for the details.

We trolled rapalas ranging from size 3 floaters to #7 shad raps. We got one on the size 3 floater, two on #5 shad raps, one on a #7 shad rap. No color stood out as producing better. Trolling speed ranged from .9 to 2.3 mph with all our fish coming at 1.7 mph. We trolled in depths from 15' to 40'. Everything came from 25' or less except one and all the fish were hooked on flat lines except for one that bit the #3 floater 10' down on the downrigger. An interesting thing when I cleaned the fish is that one trout had four brown 4" long sticks in its stomach. Maybe someone should try trolling a stick? Good luck!

Nice job fishdoc! I am iching to get my 2 1/2 YO daughter out but I don't think she has the patience yet.

Gringo, we've been lucky with the boys. They like going fishing, but we also have an arsenal of things to distract them. It's getting a little too cold now, but when it's warmer we have squirt guns, kiddie fishing rods with big hookless plugs that they cast and watch in the water (they pretend that they're fish), toy cars all over the deck, a portable DVD player, treats that they only get when we fish, and lots of cheap plastic worms that they play with (I don't recommend power bait plastics unless you like your kids smelling like that.). The biggest thing is that when they get tired or bored, we pack up and go. This way it's always fun for them. It might make for some short fishing trips at times, but I figure if they stay interested in fishing, they'll want to do more hardcore fishing when they're older.
