Had some time after work and hurried to Green Lake in hopes to catch at least one fish before it got too dark. Arrived just before sunset around 4:10pm. Fly fished, for about an hour, with my 8wt fly rod this time in order to get some longer casts. The 5wt is more fun to fight fish with but the 8wt casts farther. Water quality was very clear and my poor man's fishing thermometer marked the water temperature at 50 degrees, but it felt a lot colder than that...me standing in the water might have been part of the reason. I had two missed strikes before I finally hooked up with a fishy.

Fished one location for about half an hour and then moved to another for another half hour. About 10 minutes into the second location, I alternated striping the fly line quickly, then slowly as I usually do and then suddenly, FISH ON! Thought it was a snag at first but then it started shaking and moving, so knew it couldn't be. First time catching a fish in December, and what do you know, it was a real treat: a brown trout! This would be my second brown trout, but first to get a pic of. The last one got away and I'm guessing was 14-16 inches (couldn't fit in my landing net). This guy was probably a modest 12 inches. Oddly, this 12 incher fought a lot harder than the 14-16 incher back in November. Revived and released Brownie back safely to swim another day! If it wasn't so cold, it would've been a great day to fly fish from the float tube on the lake ...water was calm and still as glass. Thank God for fishing in December! This'll prolly be my last fishing report of the year so Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone! Thanks to all the guys that showed me tips and gave advice on fishing this year. I learned a lot from you guys.

Hey Peter, nice to see a fly sticking out of a fish on the West side of the moutains. Always enjoy your reports.

Good to see your collective Green Lake write-ups! Funny, when living literally blocks away due to work in TangleTown, I NEVER thought about fishing there! I love lowland lakes almost as much as Alpine....there it was down the street. Sure liked the Pike and Musky too you Green-Lakers posted.

That picture turned out really well! Fish looks like it hammered the fly. Fish are not often in that position during a picture, definitely makes the shot.

Thanks guys. Yeah, those browns really do hammer the flies, much harder than most other fish. Both brownies I caught bent the hooks and caused the fly to lose some feather and fur. If this keeps up, catching browns is going to get expensive! :)

LotF...check out some bargain bins for a shooting head system so that you can keep the 5wt loaded for those ocassions. Cortlands online bargain store had a bunch awhile back for not much money. Graet job to all you guys up there working hard for those winter fish!

Thanks Aaidian, I'll keep an eye out for those. I'm actually getting a spey rod on Tuesday. With my Orvis shooting head spey line, 100' casts should be no problem. :)
