Great day on hard water! My girlfriend caught her FIRST FISH EVER(and then her second!) and I had my best day on the ice. Seven friends and I rented a cabin in Plain. Four of us, using two poles, split away from the group Saturday evening to try Fish Lake. I have only ice fished five times- three of those times were at Fish Lake, and this was the busiest I had ever seen it. I'd say about three dozen people were on the lake despite on and off biting winds.

Walking out we passed a group of exiting kids- gloves packed with trout, and saw two hook-ups. Good signs! After drilling two new holes we got an hour and a half of fishing in. My girlfriend caught two perch, the couple we were fishing with caught one jumbo perch each, and I caught two perch and two trout (trout released). We had the perch with breakfast Sunday and they were great!

We were using small green swedish pimples tipped with two wax worms. The ice was thick-- about nine inches, but the top half was very weak (and that was under a few inches of actual slush water). I was going to go again on Sunday, but decided against it due to the warming weather and rain.

Picture 1: My girlfriend with our collective perch catch (and her first fish!).
Picture 2: My friend holding her perch with an assist from me (her first fish since she was nine).

Thanks for the post! I had been wondering how the ice-fishing is over there this season. I just live by Stevens Pass, but never tried Fish Lake ice-fishing. Do you think I could get away w/ bringing an ice-ax/ice-hammer to just cut through someone's old hole? I dont have an auger. Did you see many people w/ any decent-sized trout?

nice report and good job job on getting the gf out to try ice fishing. I took a 5 gal metal bucket drilled a few holes near the bottom and throw a half bag of kingsford in and light it up, the bucket is placed on 2 bricks and burns hotter than hell for about 4-5 hours, throw a grate on top to grill some food and you have a nice picinic out on the ice, thats how I get my girl to go and it helps if your catching fish also.

I used a wood chopping axe for a few years before buying an auger....... sometimes, it isn't pretty, but gets the job done!

The later in the day you get there you can use many of the previous holes from others. Just bring a heavy stick or a hammer to break them open. The trout are about 10 -12".
