I had the same group out this morning and got into a real good bite in the Lower basin of Lake Chelan. We caught Laketrout in depths from 130 to 240ft deep today. The Ace Hi-Fly was the Bait again.. Big Fish today tipped the Scales at 11lbs. 11oz. We ended today with with 10 laketrout. Thanks again to Mike, Teri and Toby Mertens and family friend Kayla Foster for fishing with me these last 2 days..I did get Kayla to hold her Fish up today without Gloves!!!! Tight Lines to all and Be Safe!

Depends on your skill level and kayak and if you wear a wet or dry suit. I have kayaked the Inside passage and all of Baja and the Columbia from Canada on down. Roughest freshwater was on Banks Lake and the Gorge. This time of year you have to have something that prevents hypothermia, and the waves on Chelan can get big, and COLD!!! If you have a decent kayak, there's almost nothing that will really prevent it from being used safely. That being said, your skill level needs to be high enough to ensure survival. Life jacket and boat horn are a must (ever try to keep track of a low kayak in rough water? Even if you know where it is you lose sight of it. Props hurt, I think!).
If you are a once in a while weekender, which is fine, then opt for May-September. And yes, you can catch almost any fish from a kayak. You literally would not believe the sizes of various species fresh and salt that I and others have landed. Hope you watch "Kayak Fishing" on cable.
Safety first, but kayak fishing or pontoon fishing is a blast, because you are right there with the fish.
One last thing: If you want effective lake trout fishing, a depth finder and downrigger are needed. You can mount them and lots of places sell the ones that fit. Cabela's, Bass Pro, etc. The downrigger should exceed 200'. That or you have to know the lake well and/or follow someone who does.
As popular as it is getting (I've been at it for decades!), I'm sure there are others with up-to-date info that I missed!
Hope this helps. Tight lines, and God Bless.
