Wow. The lake conditions were CALM. The weather was near-perfect; sunny but not yet burning hot. We got to the lake just before 6 a.m. and the Public Boat Launch was PACKED. Uh-oh. Wait; not to fear...The wait to launch for us was about 20 minutes--- not too bad considering it was Opening Day. Lots of Dads and kids in boats, and that is nearly always a good thing. Pleasant conversations drifted thru the air--- lots of anticipation. The Sheriff was at the launch, too... Keeping order and safety involved in the fishing.

No duels with birds, no problems with heavy waves, no big winds, or lure-snatching shallows this morning; after launching the boat our outboard engine briefly stalled though. A few good-natured teasings from fellow fishermen in nearby boats got the motor going again. From embarassment. About 100 feet from the launch we caught the first fish--- a 13" rainbow. Then: another. And another... et cetera... we caught our limits in less time than it took to get our boat launched. The fish were ravenous, even with the flying bugs present near the lake surface. All of them were rainbow trout, and all were 13" or over, with a 16" being the biggest. Their hits on our lures were sudden; no nibblers here.

To say that the lake fishing conditions were great is like saying prime rib is an okay cut of beef...

As if to add to the great fishing experience: As we got to the drive-in window of a local coffee stand, the server said that the person she served in the car ahead of us had paid for our coffees. I think she looked in her rearview mirror and took pity on the two grizzled fishermen she saw in a truck, with a boat behind...

I fished there also. We used walleye rigs with artificials and crawlers. The best was a hammered silver Colorado blade. We got there at 7:30, and after waiting for the inspection by the sheriff, got on the water before 8:00. By 8:30 all four of us had our limit in numbers, but we kept releasing them and just had fun. By three o'clock, we stopped counting. We had reached 230(!) fish! We kept fishin until 6:30. I have to say, this was the most amazing day of fishing I've ever had. Our rigs were spinning reals with medium action 6'6" rods, 6lb fire line crystal with an 8lb rio flouroflex leader, with an egg sinker followed by a red bead and a swivel, then a stock hammered silver walleye rig. We casted mostly, and trolled a while for fun. It was, hands down, the craziest day of fishing I've ever had.
