For some reason, probably the wind, it was not a terrific day of fishing for that area. We fished a private lake about12 air miles away and the 3 of us only caught half a dozen fish. Granted they were 17-25 inch fish but for a private water it was slow.

I don't know which direction that wind was from but in my experience a wind from the east (warming wind) is Amber's "kiss of death", ditto for most E. Washington lakes. I lost count of the times I had 10-20 fish days under a west/south wind, just to return the following day to an east wind and a good skunking!

The wind was pretty constant, from due west. We fished in the lee of the trees lining the bank on that spit of land that forms the harbor directly across from the landing, a place where over the last fifteen years or so of fishing that lake that I have caught dozens of fish. We were anchored in 28' of water according to my fish finder, with anchors fore and aft. I'm wondering if, when we were fishing the bottom with Class VII full-sink lines, if the wind was buffeting us too much left to right. I mean, we were anchored in line with the wind, but it seemed as if every sudden gust rocked us back and forth a few feet. Do you think that would have caused abnormal movement of the chironomid pupae imitations fished that deep? We tried larvae, also, which I admit were a long-shot, but I was desperate to prove to my fishing companion that there are in fact trout in Amber Lake! I've had him in the boat out there twice this spring -- he is in fact a neophyte lake angler, a recent convert to flies, really, his only other significant experience being casting dry flies to cutts on the St. Joe, which of course would spoil anybody most days. In neither instance have we even had a hit. At one point I told him that although I've caught dozens and dozens of trout out of Amber, there still have been many days on that water where I've left the parking lot having had my proverbial lunch handed to me. That place has proven frustrating just as often as it's proven productive, especially in recent years, in fact, ever since it's been managed as a triploid fishery. And yet it draws me back...........
