Boy, do i have fish story for you! This weekend sure turned out to be one weekend we'll remember for a long time! Woke up Saturday morning about 4am. Started trolling at 4:30am up past Cascade Marina in 12-16ft of water with a blue 'Walleye Killer, and a orange 'Walleye Killer' with threaded worms. The first fish came at 5:05am. What i thought was going to be a Walleye, ended up being a catfish! At about 5:30am i got the call from my girlfriend's dad. It was time to fly back to the dock to get my fishing partner. We decided to troll south of the house for the first time this year. We started off bouncing orange, blue, green 'Walleye Killer' squids, and a Green "Walleye Popper'. With one catfish in the live-well it was time to start 'catching' instead of fishing! Before we knew it we're nailing em! One after another all in about 12-13 ft of water, and on the bottom! We pulled in 5 beautiful Walleye all averaging about 16-20". While we were trolling for Walleye we picked up a couple SM bass, and another catfish. That would be all the fish we would catch Saturday morning.
After dinner we headed out on the lake in search of Walleye. We decided to troll right from the house tonight. Within 1 minute of leaving the dock, BANG! Walleye on in 11 ft of water using a blue squid 'Walleye Killer' with threaded worm. My girlfriend reeled in a perfect 19" Walleye! We continued down the shore, and BANG, BANG! Two more Walleye in the live-well! With 3 Walleye on board averaging 17-20", we kept heading down the shoreline hoping to get some more. With no luck for the next couple hours, and dark coming quick we decided to head back toward the house. With Walleye being nocturnal feeders, we started wondering if this could be the time! Take a seat for this one! As we're heading in trolling 4 poles in pitch black from a Pontoon party boat, Tony St.Onge starts talking about the big hook he's rigging up on his double hook green 'Walleye Popper' to catch one of the 'big guys'. Now this guy's been fishing Moses lake for over 30 years, and boy did it show! In 12 ft of water at 10:10pm, and 200 ft from his dock, Tony says 'fish on'. We all start pulling in lines as fast as we can to avoid a tangle, but this fish wasn't going easy. By the time Tony has him to the boat, all our lines are tangled together with the fish in the miiddle down by the prop. I start pulling the lines in by hand as fast as i could, and immediatly felt the weight of this monster. As the lines are almost slicing through my hands, Joanne hands me the net, and shines the light down on the water, and there it is! A 10lb, 30" WALLEYE!!!! BOOM!!! I couldn't believe my eyes! I had a mess of line wrapped around my arms, and reached down with the net, and scooped him up! This fish kicked our butt's, and trashed our gear! He fought hard, and we were almost speechless at the beauty of this Walleye. Completely amazed at what just happened, and with our rods in a rat's nest hanging around the motor, we flaoted with our GIANT WALLEYE back to the dock in the dark! Saturday turned out to be one mighty fine day on Moses Lake. We ended up with 5 Walleye, 2 catfish, 2 SM bass, and one Carp i released.
This weekend didn't end there though! Sunday morning we woke tired, and beat up, but still had fish on our minds! After breakfast, we trolled the same area with the same gear north of Cascade Marina in 12-14 ft of water, and picked up 3 more beautiful Walleye all in about 30 min! With nothing for the next hour, we decided it was lunchtime. At about 4pm with a light rain, the winds picking up, and the swell rising, I decided i was going to take the kayak out to drift a bottom bouncer with a blue 'Walleye Killer' and a threaded worm. I paddled out into the wind, so i could drift back in front of the house. I got set sideways to the wind, put my paddle away, dropped down to the bottom, and srarted bouncing. I drifted once without one bite, but realized i was probably at about 20 ft. I paddled back up into the wind, and the swell was picking up, I thought to myself this is the 'Walleye chop'! On my second drift in about 12 ft of water i landed my first Walleye on the blue squid from the kayak! The weekend total ended at 14 Walleye, 2 SM bass, 2 catfish, 1 carp! This weekend was absolutely the best fishing i've ever had, and blessed with one AMAZING 10lb 30" MOSES LAKE WALLEYE!!!! Thanks for reading! Good luck on the water! Tight lines! JN
