Went to Summit lake as Melanie had the day off and I knew the fish were biting from last weeks trip. Whjle I was targeting Kokanee with the downriggerMelanie was the one to catch the only Kokanee. She was flat-lining a homemade wedding ring with a 5/8 oz. weight while I was down 40 to 50 ft. where I caught the two last week. I caught 4 trout down deep that were respectable holdovers (12 inches or so) and red inside. I released two others, one Melanie took and another on the downrigger that had been pretty chewed up by either copopods or cephlopods, can't ever keep the two straight, but basically they are freshwater sea lice, I believe. Found this HUGE hog of a largemouth floating dead, my guess from condition and smell that it died around the 4th, prob. a 7 or 8 lb. fish What a shame, a big mama capable of spawning lots of young fish.Left early as wind picked up and bite dropped off. My father and I have been fishing for Kokanee & trout in Summit from the start of trout season, but only when the weather heats up in May or June we have found all trout & some Kokanee have the Freshwater lice. Doe's the state have in ways to get rid of the lice? When the lake cools back down lice disappear as well. We have caught fish in depths between 20' to 85' all have the lice.
