A very interesting day at Green Lake. Arrived and met friend Pete at 5:45 AM at the 65th St. Pier (eastside). A bit dark yet, but got started right away. Warm morning, with a constant breeze from the south. Water temp. was 74 degrees at 10'. About 6:30, Pete had a humungous hit, hammered his line twice... broke off his terminal tackle... hook, line & sinker! No idea what it was. I was fishing two rigs, Power Bait on one, worms on the other. About 7:00 I reeled in an 8" Perch. Went to Power bait on both rigs, orange on one, chartreuse on the other. About 8:00 I caught a nice 12" to 13" Rainbow, but it came out of the water at the pier, just as I was reaching for my net, and spit the hook.
Always look for a day's "theme"... today it was Father and Daughter. About 6:30 a gentleman named Ernie arrived with his daughter, Amy. Ensuing conversation revealed that Ernie lived in Alaska, came to Seattle to await an heart transplant at UW. He was taking advantage of the wait, to try out the local fishery. Had wonderful stories about fishing in Alaska. I enjoyed watching the interaction between a loving Dad and his devoted daughter. About 6:30 Ernie reeled in a 12" Rainbow... may as well have been a 30# Chinook... great joy for father and daughter. About 10:00 another father and daughter arrived at the pier... Micheal and his daughter, Mia... about 8 or 9 years old, beautiful young lady who really knew how to handle a spinning rod and reel... she could outcast most men I've seen casting. Long brown hair with sunglasses propped stylishly atop her head, and designer jeans to boot... father and daughter were casting spinners and spoons. Soon dad caught a 3" baby bass... about the same length as the spoon he was using... Mia went into a dance of joy, out came the phone camera and pictures were taken before the bass was returned to the lake. Again, it may as well have been a 30# Chinook! A bit later Micheal landed a bright, chunky 12" Rainbow... again with the dance, the squeals of delight and the phone camera pictures. What loving, joyful play between father and daughter!
About 8:00, Witkowski showed up at the pier with a bag full of Rock Bass, and proceeded to catch several more. A bit later I noticed that he had moved to the shoreline just south of the pier... doing some "Extreme casting" through the willows and shoreline brush... I was watching him as he reeled in his plastic, when the water literally exploded 8' in front of him, and a huge LMBass left him shouting epithets as his plastic came shooting back at him, empty. Keep at it Wit... it will happen!
The rest of the day was anticlimactic... the later morning became quite cool..weird watching fog form on the lake's surface and blow along in the breeze. Pete landed one trout of 12", I changed up to green Power Bait (lemonlime) and landed two, 11" and 13". Due to the warm water, the trout are noticeable lethargic... not much fight until they come to the pier.
Watched a couple ospreys fishing... appeared one of them may have hooked into a large fish (carp?) as it was drug nearly underwater... took quite a while for it to recover and regain flight. We left the lake at 1:00 PM, the sun just beginning to make an appearance.
Good luck and prayers for Ernie. PTL!
