Today I spent a few hours trying the North section of the lake in the Pontiac Bay area. Even though the Sand Pont Sailing Center had set up a course in the area, and was conducting races, I managed to keep out of their way and pick up some fish. I marked bait and large schools of bigger fish that I didn’t positively identify, though I consistently picked up 6” to 10” blackmouth whenever I passed over them. Most of the action I had was in waters 45’ to 70’ deep and right near the bottom. The cutts were all good sized fish and I released all but one due to its misfortune of taking a hook through the eye. The fish was absolutely loaded with sticklebacks, so I’m guessing that is what made up the bait balls I was marking. I picked up my fish with mini hoochies and mini Apex lures behind a medium sized Abe and Al style flasher, the fish didn’t seem to have a preference of one over the other. I’m guessing that at this time they are strapping on the feed bag and going after anything that moves. The bite should only get better as the summer continues, however my next outing will be for perch, they are bound to have put on some weight by now and I’m jonesing for a fish fry. It was mostly overcast with moderate winds while I was on the water and the pressure was steady at 1016mb and made for a very comfortable outing.
