Well, we hadn't been out to Stevens in quiet awhile, and after a weekend full of salmon and steelhead in the rivers, we wanted to do something a little more low key and just have some plain ole' fun! So we decided to head out the Lake Stevens to see if there were any Kokanee to be had, and maybe try some different techniques on the flats for trout.
However almost as soon as we launched I started marking fish in the cove, and we had to try it. So we dropped down some random mish-mash of gear and started getting hits immediately! (well more like violent ticks -- obviously perch) Well I love perch, as they are so tasty, so we stayed here and caught perch for awhile until we felt as though we had enough for dinner.
Once we had enough to make a dinner for 4 we got the downriggers set up and started trolling wedding rings and hootchie rigs behind Dick Nite dodgers. We focused our efforts out in front of the Cove, between the 80' and 100' line. And before we knew it it was fish on! Got it to the boat, and it was fish off :( Re-baited with Gulp Maggots, and dropped it back down, with not long to wait for the second kokanee bite of the night. This time we got it in the boat and it was a nice 13"er! The next few fish were smaller, and we lost some more at the boat. One of the last fish to be caught was another nice fish measuring in at 10.5". We brought 4 kokes home, losing probably 6 more either at the boat or missing the hits on the downriggers. 1.3mph was the magic number with 20'-40' of cable out on the downriggers. We started fishing around 4:30PM and headed in around dusk.
All in all it was an awesome night just Cody, Me, and the Dogs catching fish and relaxing after a big weekend of salmon in the rivers. If I ever get another free day, I will certainly be back out!
