Not a bad day on the water, tried a new color combination wedding ring that I tied up with a double snelled hook about 2 inches apart. I was by myself, always takes a bit longer to key in on the fish when you're by yourself. Ended up boating 4 nice cutts in the 16-18 inch range, 3 had roe which I have cured and will use for steelhead bait. I tied up some wedding rings with chartreuse beads on the ends with two purple beads in the middle, not because I knew it would catch fish, it just looked cool, very scientific. Used a smile blade in front and tipped the hooks with crawler. The lure worked pretty good, all fish came around 15-20 feet, a little foggy on the lake, big chironomid hatch, fished with about 6 other boats through a huge flock of gulls that were eating the emerging insects, lots of trout jumping at the surface, so that's why I fished a bit shallower, some additional hits, but they didn't stick, not a real aggressive bite, but after spending the previous day working on rewiring a new bilge pump and the main electric supply to the motor, it felt good to get out.

I use pink, blue and chartreuse smile blades, but my favorite is the original silver/glitter one, medium size usually. Side note, when we use them, flies are wooly buggers on a longer shanked hook to accommodate a couple small beads so the smile blade spins. Standard tout colors apply, black seems to do well though.

I forgot to mention one interesting thing, in the belly of one of the trout was an old gnarly looking grub like bait that was about 2.5 inches long. I was filleting the fish and asked my 6 yo if he wanted to see what was in this hard belly, that's when this fossilized plastic bait was found. Obviously indigestable, but the fish was fine and obviously still eating.

Thanks docshane. Have you ever tried olive or black bunny leeches? We do great on them in eastern WA for rainbows and Browns.

Definitely, I use egg suckin leaches sometimes, black rabbit strip with red yarn egg. Olive I am sure would do awesome as well, but I don't use olive much, never get around to it. I am going to give olive an honest go, it's fun to see what you can get them to bite on. I should have lots of time to tie up some new flies seeing as how I am having ACL surgery next week. Steelhead this sunday and my fishing is on hold for a while.

Olive with red hackle works great. You also need stinger hooks on the back to grab those short nippers in the lips. Get well soon and...isn't a fish rod good physical therapy?

Ha! I think so. It might not help the knee, but we all know what a day on the water does for the soul. I'll definitely try olive and I too am a believer in trailer hooks, they just flat out catch you more fish. Thanks for the well wishes. Hope to be out there soon.
