Went out to play with new fish finder and downrigger, bugs everywhere. Marked fish at 25 to 35 feet, had a couple of hits on a needlefish, switched to a green wedding ring, with piece of nightcrawler and trolled a hotshot on the other pole as in the bug area saw fish surfacing for the bugs. Got one Cut on the wedding ring about 16" and one 10" RAINBOW on the Hotshot, caught both near the weather buoy. Hate to admit it but I think I had the tension on the downrigger clip to tight and was pulling the Cut around for a while, found out had a fish on when I tripped the DR to check my gear, oh well trying to learn.

Is there a 2 rod endorsement on lake sammamish now?

LIve and learn with the new gear. Have fun.
I was going to say that it is a balance on where to set your line in the clip sort of... obviously depends a little on which clips you use. I prefer to use full size large, salmon type clips. I set the line half way between the black line on clip and the open end. I do not expect the cutts. to necessarily release the clip. Larger fish will usually do so, but the real talent is in watching for suttle changes in the action on your rod tip.
You will get to know when you have a fish that hasn't released. It's actually pretty obvious usually, but if they lose there "Fight" and start to drag, it is more subtle.
Thanks for the Samammish cutt. report!

Like Quad, I also use the full size clips & put the line half way between the end & the black line. I actually prefer not having the fish pop the clip - I think it gives a better hookset.

I usually put out ~100ft of line, before putting it in the clip. Between that, the DR ball & the line between the clip & rod it there is a lot of stretch that will dampen any movement from the fish. Using light mono, it makes it very hard sometimes to tell if you got a fish.

One thing that helps is to remove as much slack as possible, by reeling down the rod as tight as you can without popping the clip.

But what I think works better is to use braid. I use 10# powerpro, combined with a soft UL rod. That lack of stretch makes it real obvious when you have a fish on. And the soft rod provides plenty of cushion when fighting the fish.

I'll verify that with braid and a good long release clip, it is quite obvious when something is going on with your gear. With all the kokanee in the lake it may be possible that a few of them hit your offerings. If you don't get to them quickly, they'll tear the hooks out of their mouths on their own, if the release doesn't trip.

Snake - The two rod endorsement is not valid for all of the Lake Washington system, including Lake Sammamish.
