Had a small window to fish but live very close to Eloika so headed that way. I've never fished this lake thru the ice but have fished many times from a boat during April /may/June of many years. Wind was blowing light snow, temp was 27 degrees. Approached the boat ramp and noticed open water to the right of the ramp. HMMM. Saw an angler on the ice about 100 yards from shore. Ice felt solid but Tuesday's and Wednesday's temps in the mid 40's made the snow cap on the ice very slushy. About 5 inches wet snow, ice, water to walk thru to get to a good location. Walking over that slush was tiring and wet. Chatted with the only other angler on the lake and he said fishing was slow. I settled in on a previously cut hole and began jigging. I was using Berkley Gulp Maggots, glo hook and 4 lb test. At about 2:30 the wind picked up, the snow increased in intensity, and it seemed much colder. I was now the only angler on the lake. Worked three more existing holes before catching two small perch from hole number 5. By now its getting darker, and My Sorels are telling my toes that its cold. I'm off the ice after an hour with two perch. In looking over many precut holes I'm guessing the ice at 5 inches. Everywhere I walked it felt solid, but the slush made moving difficult. The next few very cold days will firm the top snow / ice / water which will make passage easier. I'll be back Sunday morning.
