This report is a little late but here it is. I went out fishing after work on Saturday morning. I wanted to see if the carp are active yet and so I had my chum made up and was going to use hominy as my bait, a new type of corn for me to use. I hadn’t bought a new license yet and knew I didn’t need one for carp but was debating it at work. Working nights I am tired and I wanted the most fishing time possible and didn’t want to wait to get the license; however I had the feeling that if I didn’t have the license I would catch something I couldn’t keep, debate ended I got the license.

I was going to fish Logboom, when I first arrived the water was calm, this lasted for about fifteen minutes and the wind kicked in and made the water extremely choppy. I had dressed correctly for this but in my haste in getting ready the night before I had forgotten my gloves. I started on the deep end of the dock but wasn’t getting anything and my hands were starting to get cold so I decided that I would move down the dock and this would make leaving an easier chore. I moved over towards the railing threw out my chum, placed my hominy over it and proceeded to watch my line.

The method I use for catching carp means leaving your bail open so the fish feels no resistance and will take the bait more freely; however, this is rough when it is windy as the wind will take small amounts of line and make the soft bite hard to detect. As was watching the line and saw a small amount go out, I watched unsure if this was the wind or not, this happened twice more and I was now sure this wasn’t the wind. I closed the bail, reeled in the slack and set the hook. I immediately felt the flipping of a fish on the end of my line, but this wasn’t the carp I wanted or at least it was a small one. I kept reeling in until I could see the simmer of the fish surfacing, love that sight. The fish broke the surface and I could see that this was a cutthroat trout. He measured about 13 ½ inches. I fished for a little longer after this but my hands were too cold to stay and nothing else was biting. Not bad for my first outing of the season.

I also went out the next day and although the water was placid there was no action at all for me.

FYI - never tell on your self on this website. Other users/members will dam and ridicule you. Speaking in regards to your sentences about chumming and expired licenses.

Just mentioning for you own benefit, saves you a headache.

topdawg- it is legal to chum on lake wa, and unless something has changed I believe you are allowed to fish for carp without a license. So he wouldn't have been doing anything illegal anyways.

My only point was some WA Lake members will cause you a headache and jump all over you for certain things.

That's all. Wasn't saying he was illegal on his actions. Just be cautious.

Trying to keep it civil and cool here of course.... (and I know you're not busting his chops, topdawg47) but seriously, I know that people have issue with things like bonking a native steelhead even if it's legal in certain rivers.... there is room for debate on ethics there for sure.
But! If anybody had issue with fishing carp unlicensed (as per regs) and even carp chumming, I'd have to load both barrels.
Carp are a nuisance fish that roots up the bottom and habitat of other fish, over populated, and nasty. That is why even the state doesn't care about a license, bow N arrow, chum, etc.-- Anyway, not meant to fire anybody up.

Honestly, I could care less what people think. I do find it annoying when people don’t read the Fishing Rules and comment incorrectly thus misinforming other people in the process.

Now to the issues: One I bought a license before fishing, as I stated in my post, and this was so just in case I caught something I wanted to keep I could, Two, you don’t need a license for carp, Three it is legal to chum in Lake Washington and Four, please no posts about corn killing trout as this rumor has been disproven by many university studies and just in case you are wondering why I am targeting Carp I am going to use it as bait for crayfish.
