Went out to Leland for the first time in a few weeks yesterday.

Got to the dock at about 10:30 or so. Fishing started out slow, took about a half hour to get first fish, but it picked up after that. Hooked a couple of fish every 15 minutes, before I decided to set-up my second rod with Red Power Eggs(I was using my standard set-up of float and worms on both at first.) Didn't take long before I got a very light hit on the power eggs, thinking it was a small fish...But not very long into the fight, the fish starts going crazy, taking a good 5 minutes to land. Finally got it to the net. Ended up being 17 inches, my new best for Leland. Shortly after that, my grandpa lands two 14 inch fish. Fishing slowed off and on, but landed a few more fish that were about 12 inches or so. Only one fish away from limiting we were about to leave, when my second rod doubles over. After a somewhat long fight, I land my last fish of the day, a 15 incher.

Ended up being a pretty good, with no fish under 12 inches. Seems the fish were a lot bigger than what I was catching two weeks ago, so finally went home with both our limits. Saw a few other nice fish caught, including a huge cutthroat. It had to be at least 17 inches, if not more. Biggest I've seen out of Leland, and first one I've seen caught this year.
All fish, except three, were caught on float and worms, at about 4 ft down. My two largest and one smaller fish were caught on red power eggs, small slip sinker and about a 2 ft leader.The larger fish seem to be down lower, but more fish higher up.

Miss fishing that lake,love to see a posting on it.Since my last heart attack I became unable to work,with my wife already on disability we don't have much income.I was hoping to get my license this month but couldn't swing it.Its great to see this site and hope and dream though.keep posting on this lake,its my favorite lake on the peninsula.

PS...my biggest caught there was 22 inches.

Nice report! I've been fishing there pretty regularly the last couple of years and still have much to learn about the lake, but I think you've hit the nail on the head for the big ones this time of year. I had great luck trolling for them the whole spring, and then as it warmed up they stopped hitting anything trolling. Every big one I've seen someone catch, or heard them tell of catching now, has been caught bottom fishing. The stocked ones are in the surface waters and attack anything that moves though. Black seems to be the best color for them.

Sunfighter: I'm with ya on Leland being a favorite lake. It seems to have everything, though it's very reluctant to share it's bass, crappie and perch with me! Do you ever get down there just to look around? See what's going on? If so, it'd be nice to meet you. You too Bake!

David A...I only had luck with bass once.Caught 14 or 15 0f them on an august day about 6 years ago.Couldn't keep them off my line.Most small 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 lbs,2 were over 4.I was fishing off the bank below the launch throwing a rootbeer plastic worm with no weight.Don't know what they were all doing there but it was a blast.Never caught another one before or after that day.Also caught a good size catfish in the same spot on nightcrawlers.Watched on guy bring in a bluegill when the water exploded,seen a good size bucket break the water and it was gone.We guesstimated it at 8 lbs. plus.
