Crappies were on the bite today. Took Ross (pic.) with me for some morning fishing. We caught over 50 crappies and some small perch. I kept 5 of the larger ones for dinner. The fish ranged from 8" to 11".

If you don't mind me asking, how do you find these crappie? Reason I ask is that I've fished a lot of the I82 ponds, and I have real trouble finding the schools (usually suspended). Do you just use good electronics to find the schools? Fish the weedbed edges until you find them? Other techniques??

Thx.

Lately I've been using a white crappie tub with a 1/32oz. lead head and "fan" casting. The crappies seem to be scattered now so you may only get 1 or 2 at each spot you fish. I use ultra-light gear, 4lb. test, 6'6" light action pole etc.. I cast as far as I can and then I let the jig drop watching the line for the slightest twitch. Lots of times the crappie will hit it on the drop. If nothing happens I'll "pop" the jig back to me. Usually if a crappie takes it you will feel slight pressure, like hooking some weeds. Set the hook, they don't usually smack the jig. I pick up trout fishing this way too. The trout WILL smack it.

It's cooling off now, try Fio Rito. Lots of small crappies, can catch them up to 9". This last spring 3 of use caught over 100.
