I got up at 3 AM to make the 50-minute drive to fish Amber Lake before dawn. I fished alone in my canoe from 4:35 AM to 9:50 AM, but only caught three TINY, 5"-long Rainbow Trout. I could see small fish rising all over the lake for a while, but they were the size of a Hot Dog! I had fun anyway paddling up and down the entire length of the lake -- I had the entire place to myself. I think everybody was at nearby Williams Lake, which I drove by on the way home.
I was using a 3/8-oz. silver Kastmaster slab jig with a single barbless hook. Since I was driving northwards about 1 foot a second with the breeze, I was able to cover a lot of water with my spinning rod casting and jigging the Kastmaster sideways as I reeled in. I counted down the lure about 8 seconds to get it down to the thermocline area. None of the Rainbows were tight against the shoreline; they were out a ways in deeper water.
Attached is a picture of one of my three baby Trout! :)
