Having decided that Baker Lake was just too slow to fish another day on, JoAnn and I returned home yesterday and decided to fish locally. Lake Stevens was up and kokanee was the target. I was interested in trying a couple adjustments to my technique after being skunked my last trip with Gringo Pescador.
We launched at 5am and started fishing the south corner of the lake. We had four rods running, staggering depths to cover from 18 to 50 feet deep. One change I decided was to work the shallow water column more today and only drop one line deeper. This seemed to be a good move as our two keeper fish (both 14 ½”) came at 33 feet. Our two smaller fish came at 18-22 ft. And the deeper rods (50 and 38 ft) made not a whisper.
The other “experiment” was a new scent which I used with Gulp Maggots. They went on the shallow rods, while the deep rods had my shrimp and a kokanee store scent. The results: New Scent 4, Old scent/shrimp 0. Hmmmm. More experimentation must be done to further Science!
We fished until 10:30am and called it a day. The two nice fish came in early, plus we had two on that were also keepers. All the hot action died down by 7:15am. Early bird for sure on this day! We got a couple small guys mid morning also.
Now what was that new scent… new to me anyway… let me test it a bit more before I give it up. :-)
