did I read that right - you dragged a boat two miles? You win the perseverance of the year award for angling!

Well, he might have put a harness on the dog and had him pull it dog sled style. :-)

I have carried my canoe into many lakes over the years but never even close to 2 miles.

Guys, thanks for the comments. Let me clarify, I use a rugged lightweight kayak cart with two wheels to get my boat to remote lakes.
At Melbourne, the gravel forrest road turned into a bark path with anti 4 wheel trenches and then that stopped about 1500-2000 feet from the lake. Most of that was through a newer clear cut area. The last section was through the woods left standing around the lake. My wheels certainly can't handle the clear cut and wooded terrain. So, I take my boat of the wheels and drag it. Hard work, but not 2 miles of dragging.
Sorry for the confusion. The fishing was fun and the location was great. I'll be going back some time.

Ohio bassin - Thanks for the kind words. I have fished most of the lakes in Mason County but not Melbourne. Your report got me interested so I looked up the lake and found a topographical map and other information. I sent it to Mike - He will probably post it when he gets a little time. Have you ever fished Tiger, Mission or Howell. Those lakes have me skunked. I have made it into Deer Lake and found it fair bass fishing for bass up to about 13 inches.

Bob, Thanks for the reply. I have also fished many of the lakes in mason county. I tend to skip large and developed lakes. Large lakes do not suit my small kayak/canoe setup. Developed lakes are much easier to get to but all the houses and docks and people are not usually on my fishing menu. So, I have not fished Tiger or Mission but have fished a couple of times at Howell, nice setting. I had luck with planted rainbows late in the season last year. Deer lake, is a favorite of mine. A little tough to get to but not super difficult. By chance I was there with the dog last Thursday, caught some smaller bass in cover on the lakes edges and caught a cutthroat as we paddled back to shore in the rain. You mentioned before that you have a canoe, is it portable on wheels? I was thinking of heading back to Melbourne. I have found a way to get there without the crazy hard overland boat dragging.

Ohio - Old age got to the point where it was getting difficult to load and unload the canoe. It was a wonderful little craft and I fished a couple hundred different lakes from it - some of them quite large. I finally gave the canoe to a grandson for a wedding gift. I also had a nice Bass Tracker bass boat that I fished about a hundred lakes from but I gave it to my son-in-law, I now have a small "canoe like" boat on a trailer that works well for me. There are a couple rather large lakes that have outboard motor bans that provide excellent bass fishing - Devereaux and Benson. Trails End also is a no gas engine lake but you probably have fished that one. Jiggs Lake is another one you would probably like. Good luck - Bob J
