Got home from work a bit earlier than usual... couple of difficult days and needed to unwind... sooo, decided to head to Lake B. to see if the Cutthroat were interested in my offerings. Chilly, foggy/cloudy afternoon, with a persistent cold breeze from the north... 46 degrees. Got to the lake about 2:45 PM, lines in the water by 2:55. Water temp at 10', 58 degrees. Started with nightcrawler on one rod, Salmon Eggs on another. Started having bites on the nightcrawlers, immediately, but no hookup... about 3:20, finally able to hook into a beautiful, silver bright Cutt that leaped out of the water several times before I got him to the net. Only 10 1/2" and would have released him were it not for the fact that the hook was into his gills and he bled badly (the only downside of fishing with bait!). Continued to have bite after bite the rest of the afternoon, but could not buy a hookup... tried all manner of bait presentations, various hook sizes, etc.... these trout would nibble the ends of the worms and forego the hook.
Saw a couple of frequent fishermen at the lake, Brian and "Big Mike"... good to catch up with them... they were having the same frustrating time as I was. Brian left about 4:00, and Mike finally landed a small Rainbow about 5:00. Got much colder as the sun began to set, headed for home about 6:00. Still love to fish this lake! Cutthroats should be coming on strong as the lake continue to cool. Watched the resident eagle snag a fish only feet off the pier, out in front of us... what a show!! PTL!
