Haven't been to Flowing Lake since I was about 10 years old, over fifty years ago, for a family picnic. Wanted to try some new waters, get familiar with the lake for future fishing expeditions. Fished the north shoreline at the county park. Arrived at about 8:00 AM, walked the shoreline a bit to find a good spot to fish. Chose a spot to the east of the roped off wading area and began fishing about 8:30. Air temp a chilly 35 degrees at the start, water temp was 46 degrees at the shoreline. First two hours were very pleasant, as the sun came out and really warmed up the air. Began fishing with Power Eggs (fl. orange) on one rig, nightcrawler on the other. Two hours of fishing produced nothing, "not even a nibble". The lake bottom was very sandy and small gravel, very shallow... after a bit more exploration, decided to move to the west side of the wading area, where the lake bottom was more rock strewn, but still very shallow. Ten minutes after the change, fish on (PE)... and reeled in the only fish of the day, a 12" Rainbow. By 11:00, clouds and fog rolled in and the rest of the day was cold with off and on again wind. Tried various baits, presentations and colors, with no success. Saw a half dozen other bank fishermen and women, staying for short periods of time, with no success. Saw two small boats on the lake and one of them landed a Rainbow out in front of me (trolling with gang-trolls). Only other fish I saw caught was by a Common Merganser, and he was having a very difficult time swallowing a 12" trout... watched him struggle with that fish for fifteen minutes before he swam too far down-lake for me to see if he was ever able to get it down. All in all, a pleasant experience on a new lake, will no doubt return when the fishing picks up. A very shallow lake around the perimeter! PTL!
