New to Sockeye fishing & been reading up on generous anglers & contributors experienced in the field. a Shout out & Thank you to Rseas & fellow fishermen.
Saturday morning - launched the kayak at 5 then headed northeast of Shannon Creek. First rod started to bounce & netted a Kokanee. Reset & around 7 am saw a boat net a Sockeye then the fish finder colored up around that time with fish shallow from 20-30 feet. Lightly paddling & saying hello to boats passing by the 2nd rod tip bounced, immediately setting the hook. False alarm? Line comes screaming out & fish clears the water with every right to be upset then throttled towards the kayak leaping several times until the fish literally hit me in the face snapping the leader line. Shellshocked, I started laughing. Good sized Sockeye with a message - Welcome to Baker Lake.
Several boats netting there own on a clear, calm, & at times still water morning. Friendly & courteous Fish & Wildlife out & about keeping everyone honest.
Sunday morning about 15 minutes in, I ran into a school of fish that yielded the first Sockeye that was netted in the kayak.
Great trip & a Special place.
