Went south to celebrate my grandson's (Benjamin) eighth birthday. Ben has been dying to go fishing with grandpa, so we headed to Lake Tanwax to see if we could get some perch to bite. Rented a boat at Rainbow Resort, they have been great to me in the past. Spent about five hours on the lake... tried several locations that have been good in the past, without a bite... headed for the "hunny hole" on the southeast shoreline, and began to hit some fish. My son Andrew, Ben and the next oldest (of four), Judah (five years old)... all caught fish, perch, LMB, and bluegill. Had a great day... grandpa kept the worms and maggots on the hooks and smiled all day long. Ben can cast a line with the best of them... going to be a dedicated fisherman. Amazed at the boys' patience and love of fishing already. Were entertained all afternoon by eagles and ospreys and a close up encounter along the shoreline by a doe and fawn.
Best rig was a small (1/16th oz.) crappie jig with a maggot. Bright sunshine all afternoon, temps nearing 80, water temp at 8', was 77 degrees. Was told at the resort, "don't even try for trout, they aren't biting anything!" No trophies today, but in grandpa's mind, one of the best fishin' days EVER!! PTL!
