Pete and I headed north to sate our weekly lust for the Rainbow. Picked Pete up at his house and headed north at o'dark-thirty... arrived at Gissberg a bit after 5:00 AM. Mild temp of 63 degrees at outset, not a cloud in the sky... made our way to the north side of the lake, lines in the water by 5:30. Water temp at the shoreline (8' deep) was 70 degrees and wisps of fog were moving over the lake's surface. Not a breeze all morning. About 6:00 Pete reeled in a 10" Rainbow, I landed two of the same size, about 7:30 and an hour later, then no more hits... the sun was high and the temp was beginning to climb. Best rig was fl. orange Power Eggs with a leader of 2' to 3', so the fish are near the bottom, trying to stay cool. Pete did land a feisty 7" perch on the aforementioned PE (actually, he found the fish in a 5# bundle of lake grass when he reeled in his line to check his bait!). Lots of aquatic vegetation around the shoreline, difficult to get the terminal gear in without snagging 5# of lake salad.
Had great fun watching schools of small LMB and lots of bluegill patrolling the shoreline. Walked back to the north lake and observed schools of what appeared to be fingerling trout along the shoreline, probably baby cutthroat. Did watch one trout of 16" to 17" swim along the drop-off line, heading toward the channel connecting the two lakes. Lots of bullfrog tadpoles gulping air and the guest appearance of the resident eagle and a sighting of "Megatooth" the mammoth beaver made the morning much more than tolerable. Great to soak up some rays, smoke a bowl-full of my favorite pipe tobacco and good conversation with a friend, couldn't ask for anything better. Prayers for Pete's wife Cherie, as she undergoes surgery on Wednesday. PTL!
