JoAnn and I fished Monday and Tuesday on our much anticipated “Return To Lake Wenatchee” trip. When last there, a few weeks back, we brought back 20 sockeye. With reports coming in that the lake was still fishing well, we had hopes of another 5 Star trip. Alas, it was obvious our expectations were too high and my fishing ego was handed a blow (which I will recover from…)
Monday was just a beautiful day, sunny, calm, and not as hot as last trip. We had moored on the lake and watched a horrible movie the night before with Nicolas Cage, “Rage”. Save your $1.10. I had gear out and running at crack of dawn, and we started getting in to them immediately. The fish are definitely cruising deeper, ranging now from 35 to 80 feet deep, and most in the 55-70 foot range. You can’t miss them on the fishfinder. Anyway, we had a nice AM bite that just died for us at 7:30. We ended up with 5 in the cooler and an equal amount that came undone. After that the rest of the morning was nada. We did see fish here and there caught. The crowds have thinned out significantly, so that was nice. We ran back to the state park at noon for lunch and ice cream, and again headed out at 3pm for a bit of evening fishing. The wind had of course picked up, making things more challenging. We did manage to get one more fish to make 6 for the day.
The fish are definitely turned now, however, in cleaning them I found about 75% still firm red flesh, and the rest starting to get pale and mushy.
Tuesday. The last night’s movie, “Escape”, with Arnold and Sylvester – much better, recommended for a rental. Anyway, again started at crack o dawn, 5:30 or so, and the wind was up from the get-go, but not horrible, and it did moderate making the morning’s fishing not so bad. Hit a fish within 5 minutes of trolling and knocked it off at the net. “Really? Going to be one of those mornings?” Yup. We proceeded to lose fish after fish, only managing to get one fish actually into the net. Yikes! The bite was definitely not as good as yesterday, but still, we had our chances. Oh well, ended the trip with 7 fish and that’s a lot better than a skunk, which some people had. Others seemed to be doing very well, so we fell in the middle, average, which is not a horrible place to be.
Our two trips to Lake Wenatchee were such fun. It’s a great place to fish, the scenery is awesome, and the state park is nice. The only negative is that darn boat launch. If it opens next year “We’ll Be Baaack…”
