my friend yen (ilvlkcassidy) and i hit lake mcmurray today in search of trout. we arrived just before noon, the wind was rough, the sun was bright and the temps were hot, some of the toughest conditions there ever could be for trout. after nearly an hour of paddling against the wind to get to the far end of the lake, i finally start trolling and not 2 minutes into it, my rod doubles over, i was trolling a watermelon dodger with a pink hoochie naked. put the fish in the bag, put the gear back down, just as i get it to depth i get slammed, fish on another in the raft, my passenger (yens dog) was pretty excited about the fish he scampered over to give it a sniff, then back on the bow were he was perched most of the time. about the time i hooked my 3rd fish yen caught up to me and we did a midlake passenger transfer onto his yak. back to fishing, i have 3 bows on board, and all 3 came on the watermelon so far, then finally my clown dodger/yellow hoochie delivers, another bow, in the bag it goes, at this point yen has 2 bows on his yak, so i slow down and start to c&r, i release 2 others, he catches 2 more, then around 3 pm we both limit out, and let the wind deliver us back to the boatlaunch, a good day indeed. a nice way to cap a great weekend of trout slaying.

Thanks for the report Jon. You did really well considering the weather and high skies and heat. Those trout look like they have a bacteria on them looking at the lesions on their skin. Nice fish though.

yes they do have blight on them, those lesions while ugly, dont affect the meat. i scrub as much off as i can with a clean sponge, then, i filet them, and smoke them skin down, once they are done, i peel off all the skin and in the garbage it goes, im left with high quality nice firm pink meat, that no one else wants to eat because its ugly. ive talked to many other trout anglers and a wdfw officer about it, and im not the only one who eats these fish like this. the officer sais "dont eat the skin."

Some of those lesions look like strawberry disease, its been affecting most of the lakes especially the planted fish. Supposedly only affects rainbows and isn't a problem to eat but I don't eat the skin on affected dish either. My Pops told me there is a lice problem in McMurray too, but I could be remembering wrong. Regardless, you killed it! Great job.
